ANN: Postgraduate Degree Course in Economic and Social History:
University of Vienna

The University of Vienna offers a new specialized postgraduate degree
course in Economic and Social History, starting from October 2008.

Deadline for enrollment for the two-year M.A. degree course at the
Faculty of Historical and Cultural Studies is October 15th, 2008 for the
next study year. The degree course is organized by the Department of
Economic and Social History of the University of Vienna and will be
taught together with the Department of Economics.

This degree course in Economic and Social History is interdisciplinary
in character. It offers an introduction into theories and methods of
economics, social and cultural sciences and relates to economic and
social developments in global, national and regional contexts from the
Middle Ages until today.

Students will gain competences to understand the development of economy
and society as mutually connected historical processes. They will also
develop skills to analyze these processes and to present the results in
public and academic discussion.

The curriculum includes:
- An introduction to the theory of (historical) sciences; lectures on
skills and methods of scientific research and communication in the first
term.
- An introduction to the theories and methods of economics, social and
cultural sciences.
- Problems and research in economic and social history, including
research seminars in Economic and Social History and Applied Economic
and Social History.
- In the last term of year 2, students will finish on a research-based
M.A. dissertation (with a maximum of 35,000 words).

Language of instruction will be predominantly German. However, there 
are lecture courses which will be taught in English and the 
proportion of English-language lecture courses will increase in the 
medium term. Minor and major course work may be submitted in English 
and also the M.A. dissertation may be written in English upon 
specific request submitted to the Director of Studies. The University 
of Vienna welcomes foreign students and offers inexpensive German 
language training for enrolled students.

A graduate degree course at the University of Vienna offers:
- intensive lecture courses with a small number of students
- independent course work of students, teamwork and common workshops
- supervisions by faculty
- a broad range of relevant lecture courses offered by various 
disciplines of economics, cultural and social sciences at the 
University of Vienna - first-class research infrastructure, libraries 
and archives
- attractive fees
- rich cultural life of the City of Vienna

Students with the minimum requirement of a B.A. degree or an 
equivalent university degree can apply for the degree course as of
